Our MA in English Language Teaching is taught by the Sussex Language Institute within the School of English, a leading school of study and home to outstanding research: in the 2008 Research Assessment Exercise, 95% of research was rated as internationally recognised.
The Sussex Language Institute is:
• British Council inspected and accredited
• a founder member of QuiTE (The Association for Quality in TESOL Education)
• the university’s main centre for teaching English and other language courses, with particular expertise in teacher education and training
• home to a friendly and diverse student community
The MA draws on the practical application of theory and research to enhance your professional standing and career prospects in English Language Teaching and related fields of work.
Student profile
The programme attracts an interesting and varied mixture of experienced teachers and graduates with little or no teaching experience. In 2009-10 there were 25 students from 10 different countries, approximately half from the UK. You will need:
• Bachelor degree (equivalent to a UK 2:1) in a relevant discipline
• IELTS 7.0 (with no component below 6.5)
This MA may be attractive if you aim to work in:
• English teaching - either privately, or in a school, college, university or language school
• Educational management as a senior teacher, principal or owner / manager
• teacher training or research
• ELT publishing or media

MA Applied Linguistics
Doctoral Research supervision (DPhil/PhD) in ELT subject areas is also available, in conjunction with the Schools of English and Education. Applications for both MA and DPhil study (1+3 years) are welcome.
Course structure
Our MA includes experiential learning – involving teaching practice options and observation of real English language classes – and you will be taught by lecturers who are practising and experienced teachers or teacher trainers. You can also choose from a range of career-focused option courses, designed to advance your job prospects as a professional teacher of English.
Autumn
You take two core courses:
• Language Description and Analysis
• Second Language Acquisition and Research
Spring
You take one core course:
• Principles and Practice in English Language Teaching
You also take one option from:
• ELT Management
• Teaching Young Learners
• Using Technology in ELT
• Discourse and Communication Analysis
• World Englishes
• Practical Teaching Techniques and Observation
• Advanced Practical Teaching*
(* For experienced teachers who wish to be considered TEFL qualified by the British Council Accreditation Scheme.)
Option courses are run subject to student demand.
Summer
You take one core course:
• Research Methods in ELT
You also carry out supervised work on your MA dissertation (15,000 words)
