Durham University has won praise for the all-round experience it offers students after being named one of the UK’s top universities in a new league table.
The Complete University Guide 2010-2011 ranked Durham as the fourth best institution in the country – up from fifth last year – placing it firmly alongside other leading research-led institutions such as Oxford, Cambridge and Imperial College London.
Durham scored high marks in student satisfaction and for the average amount it spends per student on facilities for education, social and leisure purposes such as its colleges and sport facilities.
These scores were reflected in the high number of students (97.8 per cent) who successfully completed a Durham degree, according to the guide published in The Independent.
Overall Durham was named the best University outside of Oxbridge and London and the best in the North in the league table which looked at a number of other categories including research and degree quality, entry standards and graduate employment prospects.
Durham also performed well in the guide’s individual subject league tables with the University featuring in the top five or top ten in almost every subject across the sciences, social sciences and arts and humanities.
Top five subjects were archaeology; chemistry, classics and ancient history; English; general engineering; German; history; Iberian languages; medicine; Middle Eastern and African studies; physics and astronomy; philosophy; Russian and East European languages; sociology; sports science; and theology and religious studies.
Other subjects in the top ten were anthropology; biological sciences; economics; education; geography; geology (earth sciences); Italian; law; mathematics; music; politics; and psychology.
Professor Chris Higgins, Vice Chancellor of Durham University, said: “Durham provides students with a unique opportunity in terms of their academic, social and personal development.
“This guide recognises our tremendous strengths in combining first-class research and teaching, delivered by world-leading academics, with the distinctive social and pastoral experience of our collegiate system and superb access to extra-curricular activities such as sport or community outreach.
“The continual improvements we are making are testament to the hard work and high quality of our students and staff and the University’s commitment to providing students with a distinctive, rounded education, which makes our graduates among the most sought after in the country.”
Durham Students’ Union President Natalie Crisp said: “Durham is a fantastic University to be a student at.
“It offers an unparalleled student experience which seamlessly combines high quality teaching, first class facilities and countless opportunities to get involved in activities outside of your studies both within your college community and in the wider University.
“I am delighted that this experience has been reflected in the University’s performance in the Complete University Guide.”
